Bradford on Avon Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Looking to build on our opening league win against Devizes BoA took on a mature Melksham 2nd XI at breezy Culver Close. The skipper lost the toss again and BoA were asked to bat on a damp but even wicket. All players impeccably observed a minutes silence for Guy Tadman who had sadly passed away in the week.
Carter and Pike opened up against some accurate seam and swing bowling from Footner and Long and took their time. Pike soon got the pace of the pitch and started to flow, however he was trapped by Long for 10 with a ball that seamed down the slope, new recruit Nick Westgarth was bowled by Long with similar ball. Henry Pike joined Carter and steadied the ship with a mature innings playing straight at anything on line, this allowed Carter to accelerate as the bowling got easier, however he didn't learn from his younger colleague playing around a straight ball from Watling.
Enter Paul Vooght who with Henry and then Seth Robinson took BoA from 50 for 3 towards 150. Vooght played cautiously initially put then played some trademark drives and cuts, when Henry Pike was out c&b to Watling (who given his physique made an excellent dive to catch the return chance), Robinson attacked from the off and the scoreboard was moving quickly, it appeared BoA would easily get to 200, but both Vooght and Robinson perished when well set caught playing attacking shots. Ollie Saunders like Henry Pike showed maturity beyond his years in playing straight but he was bowled by the erratic Carpenter, and then when both Joe Daddow and Ben NC departed without troubling the scorers it was left to the final partnership of Bird and Allen to bat out the overs, despite Birds attacking intent he was last out in a final total of 169, leaving 3.4 overs unbowled.
Melksham started their reply very cautiously against tight bowling from the excellent Bird, Saunders and then Vooght. After 20 overs Melksham had crawled to 40 and then to 51 off 25 overs in reply. Vooght took the first wicket (re) moving House for 13 in what is best described as more of a vigil than an innings, next man in Carpenter tried to up the scoring rate but was caught by Westgarth at cover for 22 off Saunders in his second spell, for his first wicket in senior cricket.
Joe Daddow and Ben NC were bowling well but new man in Bew proved to be quality batsman and gave Melksham's innings the impetus it needed. Bew with the limpet like Douyle needed 25 off the final 5 overs and Carter and Vooght used all their experience to limit the scoring. Carter removed Bew in the penulitmate over with Melksham needing 9 off the last over. Douyle took a single off the first ball and new man in Trotman carved a boundary off his first ball and took a scrambled single off the third ball of the over, Vooght then bowled a beauty that Douyle played and missed, but with tension mounting the penultimate ball kicked off the pitch and evaded wicket keeper Pike's dive to run down for 4 byes. A bit of anticlimax to great game of cricket. Douyle though carried his bat for 64 proving the old adage about the tortoise and the hare.
Henry and Ollie played superbly putting some senior players to shame with their straight bats and sound defence. Melksham's players were highly complementary of BoA youngsters which was a testament to the spirit the game was played in.
