Erlestoke v Bradford on Avon Cricket Club First Eleven on Sat 01 Jul 2023 at 13:00
Bradford on Avon Cricket Club Won By 2 wickets
Match report
On a warm, cloudy Saturday morning, the 1's travelled to Erlestoke in a mid-table clash to finish the 'first' round of fixtures of the 2023 season. With Jack 'birthday boy' Vittles away, Bradford turned to Pikey to captain the side who led an intense warm up, followed by winning the toss (both abnormal for the 1's). We bowled first on perhaps the greenest wicket in Wiltshire and made a steady start with openers Saunders and Andrews, which left Erlestoke 36 for 0 of the first 10 overs. The first change was a good one with Moss taking the scalps of both openers and as Bradford built pressure, J pike ran out Pimonage with a cannon of a throw as Gunners took the bails off. Moss also took the wicket of Morrison with a plumb LBW shout and finished with superb figures of 9.0-0-33-3. Special mention to T.Wade who made a return back to the team after absence and bowled 9 overs straight through with economy of 3.11, whilst bowling an incredible line to a right-hander.
However, Erlestoke frustrated Bradford with a large partnership of 136 between Marrion and J.Dorgan as they made use of the short, straight boundaries. Bradford needed a hero, up stepped Rufus Lakin who took the big wickets of Dorgan (93), Marrion (70), and Coupe (14) as he bowled with a perfect flight, length and turn, whilst aided by some quick hands by all-rounder Moss behind the stumps. Saunders helped restrict the run rate in the latter part of the innings whilst taking the wicket of Mee. After an eventful innings, Erlestoke finished with a sub-par 256 for 8 of their 45 overs.
Bradford opened up with the trusty partnership of Pickup and Pikey, and made a good start as they attacked Erlestoke's openers and flew to 22 of the first 3 overs. In spite of that, White removed both of Bradford openers which led to Wade Pettican, also known as Zimbabwade (credit TW), stepping up to the crease. What was about to occur in the next 2.5 hours was a mix of concentration, determination, and redemption (from dropping a doddle of a catch in the first innings) as he played one of the most extraordinary innings from a Gudgeon as he dominated Erlestoke's bowling 'attack', smashing 121 which included 24 fours and 2 sixes. Wade's pursuit of victory was ably supported by another Bradford legend Cooksey (14) and Gunning (11) which included a forward defensive shot disappearing into the forest for six, this put Bradford on a good track to chasing the required runs as Pettican was dismissed at 201 for 5, contributions from Henry (11) and Moss (13) put Bradford even closer to the win with Lakin (23*) and Tom (15*) getting us over the line for a memorable and important 2 wicket win over our local rivals.
The celebrations travelled to Bradfords finest 'The Plough' and were met with an equally delighted Mr Vittles and specialist swing bowler Ed Bevan who had already taken a 6fer for the 2's, as the days events were reminisced and focuses were shifted to next week where the 1's are away to Marshfield 2's in another winnable mid-table clash as we look to make it 3 on the bounce. #bradslam
