Bradford on Avon Cricket Club First Eleven v Box on Sat 08 May 2021 at 13:00
Bradford on Avon Cricket Club Won by 39 runs
Match report
A Herculean effort from all at BOA CC allowed the First XI to turn in a complete performance to defeat Box by 39 runs at Culver Close. Heavy overnight rain meant a busy morning of drying and moving covers and trying everything to get the game on. Thankfully the dark clouds never opened fully and a full match was able to take place - albeit reduced to 40 overs.
BOA were asked to bat first in what were anticipated to be tricky conditions, but the Gudgeons top order never allowed Box's bowling attack to settle. Some early impetus from the National Trust (Harrington Hall) got the scoreboard ticking, although both fell relatively early for eight and 12 respectively. Moss (3) came and went, but Kennedy provided some more boundaries as he raced to 19 from 13 balls, including four 4's, before being bowled by Watchman. Meanwhile Green was into his work at the other end, playing straight and looking resolute but eager to punish anything loose. His diligent combination of attack and defence looked to be dragging BOA towards a defendable total of around 150. He was ably assisted by Roissetter (17) and Vittles (12), before being dismissed for a classy 58. BOA were looking towards 150, a more than decent score in tough conditions, until Rich Fuller uleashed some hefty strokes from no.9. The batsman drove and cut with aplomb and his rapid innings of 35 from 20 balls included one monstrous straight six and six further boundaries. BOA finished on 177 all out, leaving one over of the 40 unused.
With ball in hand, BOA looked ready to go from the off and they always looked in control while defending their total. Kennedy had the early breakthrough as Hayward chipped a full toss to mid-on and fellow opener Rich was soon following him back to the gazebo with just 14 to his name - well held at gully by Lakin off the bowling of Harrington. Box captain Welsby and Crawford then combined to frustrate BOA, however they never looked like reaching the required rate to reach the 178 needed to win. After a tight battle, it was Harrington who provided the breakthrough, bowling Welsby neck and crop as Box subsided from 64/2 to 138/9. Wade had bowled a typically parsimonious opening spell, conceding just 10 runs from this opening five overs, and he ably assisted by first change Chapman. Spinners Lakin (2-28) and Vittles (2-15) then exerted yet more pressure as Box couldn't find a way to hit the boundaries that were required.
An almost complete performance with the ball from BOA, with just 3 wides bowled and everyone going at four an over or less. In the field, it was another fine performance following on from the opening league match. Catches were well held in the deep, and little was given away in the ring too. Despite just missing out on the tenth and final wicket, BOA took 22 points from a match which many thought wouldn't take place earlier that day. That it did is testament to everyone who worked so hard to get the game on, and also the incredible team work throughout the day.
After two wins from two, BOA welcome Goatacre 2nd XI to Culver Close next Saturday.
