Great Bedwyn v Bradford on Avon Cricket Club First Eleven on Sat 01 May 2021 at 13:00
Bradford on Avon Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
A dramatic win for BOA CC 1st XI to begin the season, beating Great Bedwyn by 2 wickets despite slipping to 24/6 at one point.
BOA made the long trip east to Great Bedwyn to kickstart the campaign, boosted by four 1st XI league debutants! After a scenic tour of some of Wiltshire's prime real estate in Malborough and some seedy laybys in Seend, BOA were asked to bowl first by the Great Bedwyn skipper. What followed was a masterclass in tight accurate bowling, almost faultlesss fielding and the benefit of never shutting up in the field. A probing opening spell from Pete Andrews and Tom Wade was rewarded thanks to a spectacular one handed diving catch in the gully by Rufus. WIth the breakthrough made, BOA continued to suffocate the Great Bedwyn top order and the introduction of Wisden Cricketer of the Year Darren Stevens (MH) saw two more wickets fall. Both well caught in the covers by Wade and P Andrews. Rufus then followed up his catch by trapping C Blundy LBW for just 6. Lailey and J Blundy steadied the ship for Great Bedwyn but found runs hard to come by as Lakin, Harrington and the impressive Will Andrews kept the lid on, backed up by the whole team in the field. It wasn't until the 36th over that the hosts brought up the 100, and despite a solid knock of 58* from J Blundy they could only muster 138/6 from their 45 overs.
That looked to be more than enough though as BOA slipped to 24/6 in the face of a controlled opening spell from Great Bedwyn skipper Ben Smith - the left armer bowling unchanged to pick up 4-11 from his nine overs. With Smith seen off however things began to ease for BOA. Some controlled aggression from no. 7 Lakin got the scoreboard ticking and the required runs down to below three figures. Rufus falling caught and bowled brought Tom Wade to the crease, who also looked to latch onto anything loose. With BOA making Great Bedwyn sweat, the bowlers offered up a few more run scoring opportunties and Wade struck a six and two fours in a vital innings of 19. His dismissal, caught in the deep, meant 16-year-old Will Andrews came to the crease with still 26 needed for victory and just two wickets in hand. The young seamer looked completely at ease though as he handily saw off anything on the stumps and picked up anything of his legs to make a match-clinching 7* from 17 balls. BOA eventually knocked the runs off with 4 overs to spare and two wickets remaining to clinch a dramatic and much deserved victory to begin the season in style. Captain Jack Vittles also chipped in with the bat....
An impressive start to the season with the ball and in the field from BOA, but plenty of work to be done with the bat. A strong start to the season though as we prepare to welcome Box next weekend.
