Bradford on Avon Cricket Club First Eleven v Hinton Charterhouse on Sat 01 Aug 2020 at 13:00
Bradford on Avon Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs

Match report Our first competitive match of the season resulted in a 32 run loss to neighbors Hinton Charterhouse (HCH). Having won the toss, BoA decided to have a bowl and the BoA opening bowlers were unable to settle into a rhythm with HCH openers quickly punishing anything too full or too short. The only controversial moment in the game was Antrobus getting a decent snick behind and not walking off. Despite keeper, slips and cover fielders all erupting in an appeal the Umpire turned it down! Antrobus later admitted ' I heard it but I didn't feel it!'. The run rate was high with Harrington eventually taking the first 2 wickets. HCH skipper Henry Cheal batted well for his hard hitting 71 in which he found the boundary regularly and he was supported all the way down the order which BoA were unable to take regular wickets. From 61 off 10 overs, 111 from 20, 165 from 30 and 225 off 40 BoA felt it had pegged HCH back during the middle overs but the HCH middle order batted well.

In reply, BoA openers Harrington and Johnson started cautiously against a decent attack putting on 34 for the first wicket but sadly the top order were unable to put together any meaningful partnerships and at 111 for 7 the game looked over. Then an explosive and sometimes agricultural 68 run partnership between Chapman and Andrews suddenly had HCH beginning to worry. When Chapman was given out LBW by Mike 'I never give LBWs' Smith and the score on 179 with 83 runs still required, again the game looked over. Then a 33 run partnership between Andrews and Vooght gave HCH their second 'squeaky bum time' with HCH quicks returning resulting in Andrews being bowled. With No 11 Tadman coming to the crease, the target was so close yet so far but a final 18 run partnership gave HCH a few palpitations especially as BoA had enough overs in hand. But it wasn't to be.

BoA batters needed to be a little more patient and manage the scoreboard pressure better. Partnerships and setting small incremental targets is the key to chasing down big totals and we almost achieved that. BoA MOM was definitely Kit Chapman for his wonderful innings.
