Keevil v Bradford on Avon Cricket Club First Eleven on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 13:00
Bradford on Avon Cricket Club Lost by 15 runs
Match report
BoA lost by 15 runs. The 6 win run came to an end on a very hot day away to Keevil. Despite being second from bottom their recent results suggested that they were always competitive at home on their postage stamp-sized ground.
BoA won the toss and elected to field in 30degree heat (LFE No1). Keevil had 3 major partnerships in their innings of 93 (2nd wkt), 54 (5th) and 68 (6th) which was loaded with fully committed shots with cow corner and deep mid off taking a battering. Dean Bird and Matty Harrington bowled nicely and regained control in the middle overs but our death bowling needs some work as we bowled too few yorkers or short of a length deliveries allowing 69 runs to come from the last 5 overs with 28 runs from the last 2!! (LFE No2). Also our Extras were very high giving 49 runs to the Keevil incl 29 Byes. The wicket played its part here but so too did the Bowlers for their inconsistent line and reliance on the keeper to save the blushes (LFE No3). That said, the heat was punishing and despite that, the team rallied and continued to pressure Keevil with Pikey, Lewis and Jonny taking good catches. We did spill a couple of decent chances which was uncharacteristic for this side. However, given the size of the ground 279 wasn't beyond our reach.
In reply, BoA lost Chris Thompson early but Matty H (54) and Tony Burrows (104) put on 74 for the 2nd wicket. This partnership was broken as Keevil squeezed the field and cut out the singles which was a feature of their defence and we struggled to find a way to rotate the strike (LFE No4). Several batters tried to get going but realised that you need to spend time at the crease to get used to the track. PV and Tony put on 68 for the 5th wicket which took the score above where Keevil were at the same point in the game. However, Keevil bowled full lengths and restricted the boundary options. Rufus made another fantastic cameo with 26* from 15 balls that gave hope to the end but agonizingly we finished 15 runs short and we could identify multiple points in the game where we could have reduced this. During a run chase like this, there is often a tendency for new batters to panic due to scoreboard pressure which at times happened today and all too often players resorted to playing a big shot too early rather than rotating the strike and getting the senior batsman on strike (LFE No5).
Hopefully we can take a few positives away from this game and a massive well done to Tony for hitting his first league century of the season. We need to continue to work to improve our own individual games but we will be better for this experience. Onwards and upwards!!!
Many thanks to Angie Tadman (scorer extraordinaire) and to Richard Smith for umpiring.
